ANNOUNCING THE 2017 Engineering Manager of the Year!
Congratulations to Todd May, Director, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center
Todd May is director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Named to the position in February 2016, he heads one of NASA's largest field installations, with nearly 6,000 on- and near-site civil service and contractor employees -- including those at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, which is managed by the Marshall Center -- and an annual budget of approximately $2.5 billion. May manages a broad spectrum of human spaceflight, science and technology development missions contributing to the nation’s space program.May was appointed deputy director of Marshall in August 2015 and served as acting director from November 2015 until being appointed director. Prior to that, he was manager of the Space Launch System program since August 2011. SLS, now under development, is the most powerful rocket ever built, able to carry astronauts in NASA's Orion spacecraft on deep space missions, including to an asteroid and ultimately to Mars. The program is managed at Marshall, and May led SLS through a series of milestones, including an in-depth critical design review.

Lisha H. Adams, Executive Deputy to the Commanding General, US Army Material Command
Lisha Adams assumed duties as the Executive Deputy to the Commanding General (EDCG) effective August 9, 2015. As EDCG, Ms. Adams is responsible for materiel life cycle management, acquisition support, personnel and resource management, industrial base operations, enterprise integration, research and development, and science and technology for a globally reaching command with over 63,000 personnel with an impact or presence in 144 locations globally and all 50 states. She previously served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Materiel Readiness, the principal advisor to the Office of the Secretary of Defense leadership on policies, procedures, and actions related to the materiel readiness of Department of Defense weapons and other materiel systems. Amy Hawkins, User Experience (UX) Manager, Hexagon Safety and Infrastructure
Ms. Hawkins leads a team of user researchers and designers working collaboratively with customers, sales, services, and product developers to bring to market best-of-breed solutions for the division. As a UX professional, she has extensive experience managing commercial and government-contracted software projects. She holds a Master’s degree in Information Science, with a concentration in Human Computer Interaction from UNC Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Hexagon in 2014, she led and supported UX teams and Innovations teams at Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and IBM.

Jeffrey Lee Langhout, Director (Acting) U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center
Mr. Langhout was selected for Senior Executive Service in April, 2013. He serves as Acting Director, Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center. AMRDEC comprises approximately 10,000 military and civilian professional, scientific, and support personnel and manages a combined mission and reimbursable customer funded budget of approximately $2.4 billion annually. The Director manages the Aviation and Missile RDEC, plans, and executes technical research and engineering programs and demonstrations, e.g., research, exploratory development, Advance Concept Technology Demonstrations, and field support engineering functions of the Center. As Director, he provides support to both missile and aviation commodities in such areas as product assurance; software engineering; system engineering; production, test, and evaluation management; and business management. As top civilian authority and scientific and engineering expert on research and development for aviation and missiles in the Command, exercises direct line authority over all activities to assure adequacy of budgeting, planning, conduct, and effectiveness of projects and a balanced and competent technical capability. 18 October 2017 -SYSTEMS SCIENCE – PRINCIPLES FOR SUPPORTING THE EVOLUTION OF SYSTEMS
In this workshop, ongoing work on discovering systems science principles is presented. In the workshop, attendees will receive an overview on how three systems principles were discovered, from a systems philosophy perspective. Following, two operationalized theoretical examples using the three principles are used to explain how communication and teams emerge in organizations seeking a continuous process improvement culture. Finally, attendees will be presented with a concrete example on how the principles can influence operations at a manufacturing company (Boeing Commercial Airplanes Portland). Workshop attendees will get to practice the roadmap presented and apply it to either explore more in depth the examples presented or explore other phenomena they are interested in.
This workshop explores the journey from foundational theory to a practical application in a manufacturing environment. The context is in the design of a human activity system that supports the realization of a complex engineered system. The workshop team will showcase how generalized theory can be operationalized and then implemented under an action-research framework (Plan-Do-Check-Act).

Tour 1: Alabama Robotics Technology Park
Fee: $25 per person

Description: The RTP is a collaboration between the state of Alabama, Alabama Community College System, AIDT, and robotics industry leaders across the nation. The RTP consists of three individual training facilities, each targeted to a specific industry need. The three buildings have an investment of approximately $73 million, including robotics. The Robotics Technology Park's mission is to provide a technically trained, highly skilled, and educated workforce for automation and robotics, to assist public and private entities in developing new robotics systems and technologies, and to promote the creation, growth, or expansion of companies through innovative technology solutions.
Tour 2: NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Bus Tour
Fee: $20 per person
Time: Depart Marriott at 11:45am, return approximately 3pm

Description: Short of becoming a rocket scientist, there’s no better way to get a glimpse of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) than on the MSFC Bus Tour also known as the NASA Bus Tour!
Take a bus from the U.S. Space & Rocket Center for an exciting tour of the MSFC facilities, including stops at the Historic Test Stands and the Payload Operations Center, which is the science command post for the International Space Station (ISS) and Marshall's central research hub for propulsion systems and technologies, the Propulsion Research and Development Laboratory.
Please note that the tour includes multiple stops where guests will be getting off and back on the bus. Bathroom access is limited.
NASA Bus Tour Rules:
Tour 3: U.S. Space and Rocket Center VIP Tour
Fee: $20 per person
Time: Depart Marriott at 2:40pm, return approximately 5pm. (Note, if taking the previous bus tour, the bus will drop you off at the US Space and Rocket Center in time for the VIP tour)
Capacity: 30; U.S. Citizenship: Not required
Description: The VIP experience explores the US Space and Rocket Center with a well versed staff or docent guide. The guide will walk the visitors through the exhibits in the Main Museum (including the current traveling exhibit), Rocket Park and the Saturn V Hall at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration. The small VIP groups allow the guests to learn more about space history, NASA’s current SLS program and commercial space flight. To be with an experienced guide to ask questions and get answers of the how, when, where, what & whys of spaceflight history & the current missions to Mars and possibly back to the Moon make the visit to the US Space & Rocket Center more memorable and informative. [The current traveling exhibit is “The Science of Rock N’ Roll”]
